King Carlo Alberto of Sardinia

Carlo Alberto (1798-1849) was the King of Sardinia from 1831 to 1849. He was the successor of Carlo Felice, his distant cousin. Carlo Alberto led the army of the Kingdom of Sardinia during the 1848 battle against the Austrians at Custoza. The Austrians defeated the Sardinian army at Custoza. After the 1848 Battle of Custoza, another war between the Kingdom of Sardinia and Austria broke out. It occurred at Novara in 1849. Like what happened before at Custoza, Carlo Alberto's army was defeated again. The fall of the Sardinian army at Novara resulted to the abdication of Carlo Alberto. He was succeeded by his son, Vittorio Emanuele II. In the anime "Romeo no Aoi Sora," Carlo Alberto defeated the Austrians during the battle at Custoza. While in that battle, his life was saved by Viscount Vittorio Martini, who was a young army officer way back then. In honor of Vittorio's heroism, Carlo Alberto gave the viscount a medal with a mark of benediction from him.
